Thank you: Mary Evans with staff at Glangwili Hospital

THE OPHTHALMOLOGY department at Glangwili Hospital has set its sights on new equipment after a Carmarthen woman’s fundraising skydive raised hundreds of pounds.

Mary Evans, of Carmarthen, bravely jumped 12,000 feet for the Ophthalmology department after she received great care on Tysul Ward. She wanted to find a way to say thank you to the staff and brought in £640 to benefit fellow patients.

Mary said: “It was such an exhilarating experience. Once my feet were on solid ground, it left me walking on cloud nine with pride and confidence, and left me more determined that you can set your mind to do anything.

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks to friends and work colleagues at Carmarthen Welsh Assembly Government, local high street businesses, friends of Llangadog monthly supper club, Pam’s fit steps members and Ty Rhys neighbours.”

Sister Teeluck, from Tysul ward, said: “Mary’s thoughtful, brave and courageous participation in a skydiving activity which took place in Swansea, is testimony of her own experience, care and willingness to help in ophthalmic services in our community.

“The money raised will go towards the purchase of a Slit- Lamp, the microscope that we use on the department, to examine patients’ eyes. This machine enables us to diagnose various eye conditions and subsequently provide the appropriate treatment required. This equipment will also be utilised for training purposes for Junior Doctors and Nurses. We are all very grateful.”
