OFFICIALS supporting a controversial Welsh Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) under investigation for allegedly using a car with bald tyres, have denied he ever uses the blue flashing lights which were fitted, The Eye can reveal.
Christopher Salmon, the Dyfed- Powys PCC, was using a former police car with warning equipment when he was stopped after allegedly driving with defective tyres.
But a statement from the commissioner’s office released to The Eye states:
“Formerly used by police officers, it (the car) has blue lights and warning equipment.
“These fittings are not used by the Commissioner and his staff.”
Mr Salmon is currently being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for allegedly driving the car with defective tyres in October.
The incident was referred to the IPCC by the Dyfed-Powys Police and Crime panel, which oversees Mr Salmon’s work as commissioner.
An ex-army officer, Mr Salmon narrowly won the PCC post in November 2012 when standing as the Conservative candidate.
He will be seeking a second term at an election in May, to be held on the same day as the National Assembly vote.
His investigation follows a referral from the crime panel in January.
Mr Salmon lives in Carmarthenshire.
On his website he states: “I was elected by the public of Dyfed-Powys to be your voice and to keep you safe.
“I secure and spend around £95m of taxpayer money every year to do that – and I am accountable to you.
“I listen to you and – based on your needs – set the priorities for policing and crime prevention.”
He said about the inquiry into allegedly driving with bald tyres: “I am aware of the complaint received by the Police and Crime Panel and referred on to the IPCC.
“I will cooperate fully with the investigation.”
