Unexploded mine at Country Park

pembreyAN UNEXPLODED wartime bomb led to Pembrey Country Park being temporarily closed on Sunday morning (Mar 13) while a controlled detonation was carried out.

Visitors were stopped from entering and leaving the park from late morning until shortly before 1pm.

It is thought that the bomb, which was discovered outside the park, was close enough to the main entrance to be a risk.

A spokesperson for Dyfed Powys police said:  “We were called to the scene to reports of what we understood could have been an unexploded bomb.”

The park was closed by Carmarthenshire County Council while officers, including bomb-disposal specialists attended to the device, thought to be a WW2 mine.

Head of Leisure Ian Thomas said:  “Dyfed Powys Police temporarily closed Factory Road following the discovery of what is believed to be a Second World War military mine.”  Mr Jones added that the mine was safely detonated in a controlled explosion.

Ian Jones, Carmarthenshire Council’s head of leisure, said: “Dyfed-Powys Police temporarily closed Factory Road following the discovery of what is believed to be a Second World War military mine which was later detonated safely in a controlled explosion.

“Police investigations are continuing and we would like to apologise to all our visitors at Pembrey Country Park for any inconvenience caused.” Mr Jones added.
