Volunteers needed for Welsh Hearts charity

screen-shot-2016-09-12-at-14-28-28REGARDED as the heart charity at the centre of saving lives in Wales, Welsh Hearts is the leading heart charity in Wales for placing defibrillators into communities and CPR and defibrillator training across the country.

The charity is calling for volunteers across Wales to help them place collection tins and achieve their aim of raising £6,000.

Welsh Hearts are looking for volunteers to devote a mere hour of their time to help raise funds that will go straight to the charity’s Heart Screening Wales campaign.

Since the beginning of the year, the charity has delivered heart screening sessions to those between 12 and 35 years old in towns across Wales.

Each session lasts one day and costs lie in the region of £6,000. A collaboration of West Wales volunteers working together to help raise enough funds for this target would allow the charity to continue the proven, life-saving project in the Dyfed-Powys area.

Mid and West Wales Fundraising Manager, Meinir Lewis, is eager to rally as many volunteers as possible to the cause.

She said: “All we need is an hour of people’s time, or whatever they can spare. It’s a fantastic way to meet new and inspiring people and it would be great if local people can share their thoughts of where best to raise funds and where collection tins would work best in their community, whether it’s at their local restaurant or pub, their village shop or the cinema, so we need them to get in touch with their ideas and donate a little of their spare time for a truly Welsh cause.”

A Heart Screening Wales session in West Wales will be funded by the money raised through the placement of collection tins. Up to 120 hearts can be screened in a single session for those aged 12 to 35. The test is a painless, non-invasive ECG which takes 5-10 minutes and will detect most abnormalities, giving people the chance to manage their condition.

Meinir added: “Twelve young people in the UK die each week from an undiagnosed heart condition, and that’s 12 too many. Our Heart Screening Wales campaign sets out to help protect and promote the heart health of young people here in Wales, early diagnosis is absolutely essential. Many people still associate heart disease and heart attacks with older people; however, this is sadly not the case. But with screening we can make a massive difference and we will save lives.”

To volunteer for the collection box project, please email meinir.Lewis@ welshhearts.org or call 07422 523734. Welsh Hearts will supply you with collection tins and literature. For more information about Wales’ leading heart charity, visit welshhearts.org.
