Atkinson hat trick sees off brave Cwm challenge

MONMOUTH Town booked their place in the second round of the Welsh Cup after they beat Cwmamman United 3-1 on Saturday (Aug 14).

Once again Cwm had to ring the changes as their unusual injury and availability problems continued.

With no match next week they will be glad of the break to allow players to recover and hopefully get back to action.

However, the players who stepped up for Saturday’s match did themselves proud with a combative performance that saw the match in the balance for some time.

An early goalmouth scramble saw Monmouth hit the post and a pretty even first half saw Cwm take the lead on 25 mins with an excellent goal from Cameron Isaac, who had an excellent game, when he ran on to a flick on header to smash the ball home.

With Elian Evans and Ben Thomas working hard from the back and Nathan Mcneill strong in the centre Monmouth found chances hard to come by and Kyle Marsh was not called upon too much.

With Cwm looking to get to half time at 1-0 in the 45th min a 50/50 tackle on the edge of the box saw Robbie Atkinson continue through on to goal with the ball where he comfortably slotted home.

The second half saw Monmouth inspired from their earlier equaliser and mounting some strong attacks which saw Atkinson volley home on 57 mins after the ball bounced in the Cwm box and did not get cleared,

The game opened up and it was Monmouth who scored the goal that gave them the breathing space they needed. Atkinson again proving deadly with his third goal for an excellent hat trick.

Cwm chased the game and introduced the returning Geraint Rees and Adrian Hazelby which saw an increase in attacking intent but the Monmouth defence held strong.

An exciting Welsh Cup tie and Cwm will now look forward to the short break and to restart their league campaign and hopefully with a fully fit squad.
