Newport inflict another big defeat on Ammanford

AMMANFORD’s wretched run-in toward the end of the season continued with another heavy defeat by 8 wickets away to Newport on Saturday (Aug 14).

Confidently electing to bat first, Ammanford were quickly two wickets down with just 8 runs on the board.

Daniel Roberts (24) showed early resistance, but wickets continued to fall with depressing regularity.

Skipper Alun Evans (29) and Rhodri-Huw Davies (21) showed similar stubbornness, but it wasn’t enough to stop collapsing to another miserably low total of 107 in 40 overs.

Despite losing an early wicket to the bowling of Dan Roberts, Newport were never remotely in any trouble, thanks to a dominant unbeaten 63 from opener Mujahid Ilyas. He received support from Callum Taylor, who fell lbw to Matthew Fisher for 22.

Newport eased past Ammanford’s less than challenging total in 26 overs.

This defeat keeps Ammanford firmly in the relegation battle between the bottom three who all lost over the weekend.

Pontarddulais remain bottom but both Ammanford and Mumbles hover perilously just 11 points above them.

It doesn’t get any easier next week as Ammanford welcome league leaders St Fagans to the Park.

Also on Saturday, Newport are away to third placed Port Talbot Town.
