PONTARDDULAIS fell agonisingly short against one of the leagues consistently strong teams Bridgend at the Newbridge Fields, being pipped by the hosts with just 8 balls to spare.

Bridgend skipper Tom Baker won the toss and put Bont into bat, and it looked to be a good decision when opener Lukas Carey was dismissed for a duck.

Cameron Herring and skipper Gary Arrowsmith steadied the ship however with a solid partnership before Herring was removed for 39 with the score at 75-2.

Nick Davies then cleaned up Arrowsmith (39) and with five batsmen getting single-figure scores it was a good job that Matthew Aubery (43 not out) and Shaun Harris (24) stuck around to guide the visitors to 178-8, a total which considering Bridgend’s batting might, looked to be a touch low.

For the hosts Alex Jones was the pick of the bowlers with 3-21 whilst Sam Pearce chipped in with 2-23.

Lukas Carey made amends for his display with the bat by removing Sam Pearce in the first over, on his way to taking figures of 2-29 from his ten overs. Arrowsmith (2-47) and Shaun Harris (2-38) bowled well but Owen Morgan’s 1-19 off ten overs was crucial in the game going all the way to the wire.

As it was the class of James Kettleborough was enough to see Bridgend towards their target as the number 3 struck an impressive 85. Sam Wood (21) and Jack Davies (21 not out) saw the hosts home with just 8 balls to spare, but Bont will be encouraged by their all round display.
