CWMAMMAN United’s Calem Rees scored a late goal to give his side victory over AFC Llwydcoed on Tuesday evening (Aug 3).

If you like your drama with twists and turns and a big finale then Grenig Park is the place to be as for the third game running the match was won in the last 5 minutes.

A balmy Tuesday summer evening saw both sides commit to attacking football from the start and Llwydcoed were quickest out of the blocks with two dangerous through balls in the first 2 minutes.

Cwm settled and Ryan Hurlow started to cause all sorts of problems with his control and pace on the left flank.

With Brieg Matthews holding the ball well and Calem Rees pressing a misunderstanding saw Liam Jones the Llwydcoed defender under pressure nod the ball over his advancing keeper into his own net.

This saw Cwm then enjoy a period of dominance with Craig Gordon and Sean Howells probing that saw chances fall to Matthews and Rees that were well saved while Rob Morgans fired just over.

You felt Cwm would live to regret it and they did as in the 38th minute after two excellent blocks in the box the ball popped up and was headed in by Owen Jeffries for 1-1.

Llwydcoed started the second half the better but Cwm had the better chances with Matthews firing just wide and then Hurlow beat his man and tucked it just the wrong side of the post.

Both sides continued to create with the Llwydcoed keeper being the most tested and once again with the end of the match in sight the critical moment came. A through ball to Calem Rees was quickly controlled and he turned inside the defender to strike the winner.

The last couple of minutes saw frantic efforts from Llwydcoed which saw a dangerous free kick well saved by Kyle Marsh and the Cwm defence which had been marshalled very well by Gareth Howarth and with Elian Evans prominent throughout saw the game through for a key win.

Jody Thomas Cwm manager said: “It was a tough game and we are so pleased to get the league win. The boys did really well considering we’d had to change the team around quite a bit due to availability.”
