screen-shot-2016-09-12-at-11-57-26WEST Wales’ Athletics Region squad came through a competitive competition on Saturday (Aug 27) to have more success on the track and field to win the 18th Welsh Inter- Regional Athletics Championships overall trophy at the end of summer season fixture again during the August Bank Holiday Weekend.

A strong squad of 130 West Wales Under 15, Under 17 and Under 20/ Senior competitors selected last month travelled up to Mid Wales to compete in the red and black vest.

West Wales had won the overall team trophy every year since 1999 except in 2011 when the North Region won, when it was held in Deeside.

Throughout the six hour programme and 105 events, it was a very close battle between the West and South, with points vital in each event.

A number of fantastic performances and good relay results enabled the team to win by 50 points in the end. 1 West 999.5; 2 South 948.5; 3 North 672; 4 East 585

The overall winning team trophy was presented to the two West Wales region captains, Peter Maitland (Swansea Harriers) and Caryl Granville (Swansea Harriers). The West region also collected the overall male along with the Under 15s and Senior Men individual age group trophies.

In addition, the athletes altogether won a big total of 124 medals, including many winning performances along with a few new championship records.

At Brecon, there was an excellent team spirit in the West Wales team and most were present for the winning team photograph at the end of the competition as the evening arrived and darkness fell.

The six team managers, Hedydd Davies, Peter Walton, Nathan Jones, Jo Salmon, Jeff Cooze and Dai Jones, thanked all the West Wales athletes on their superb performances, commitment and their willingness to represent West Wales during the busy period in the year.

Some of the victorious West Wales athletes celebrate with the overall trophy at the end of the competition.
