Brecon: Murder cops make arrest following soldier’s death

policearrestA MAN has been arrested following the death of a member of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, who was found injured in Lion Street Brecon in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Dyfed Powys Police were called to the scene after the soldier, who was in civilian clothes, was found unconscious at 01:00hrs on Sunday (May 8).
The deceased was transported to hospital.
The area around Lion Street and Bethel Square was cordoned off by Police while a detailed forensic examination was carried out by specialist officers.
Dyfed-Powys Police said the serviceman, from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment, was not in uniform.
A media statement from the MOD said: ‘It is with great sadness and regret that the MoD can confirm a soldier from the Royal Gibraltar Regiment died in Brecon in the early hours of this morning.
Dyfed-Powys Police are currently investigating and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further on the circumstances.
‘Our thoughts are with his family and friends and the regiment asks that their privacy is respected at this difficult time’.
A spokesperson from Dyfed Powys Police confirmed: “A 23-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the death of a man who was a serving member of the armed forces.
“He is being held in custody on suspicion of murder and the investigation is ongoing.”
The Brecon Beacons are used by elite soldiers for carrying out exercise drills and manoeuvres. There is a barracks in the town that is home to 160th Infantry Brigade and the Dering Lines infantry school
Police in Brecon are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of Lion Street, Bethel Square, Tredegar Street, and High Street, between 12.30am and 1.30am, or has any information that could assist with the inquiry, to call police on 101 immediately quoting reference number DP-20160508-024.
