Dog owners urged to check vaccinations

shutterstock_136164980DOG owners are being urged to check that their dogs’ vaccinations are up to date following two suspected cases of Distemper and Parvo virus in Carmarthenshire.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s public health team has become aware of two possible cases, and although neither are confirmed, officers are encouraging owners to ensure their dogs are protected.

Distemper and Parvo virus are both serious illnesses that can be fatal. Both can be prevented by ensuring vaccinations and boosters are up to date.

Anyone concerned that their dog may have either virus should seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

Symptoms include sneezing, coughing, mucus from the eyes or nose, fever, vomiting and diarrhea or loss of appetite.

Cllr Jim Jones, Executive Board Member for Public Protection, said: “Neither of the two separate incidents reported to us have been confirmed, however dog owners should be aware that vaccinations and annual boosters offer protection against these viruses and a whole range of other diseases and conditions.”

Dog owners are advised to contact their vets for further advice.
