RNLI crews thanked after Blue Pool rescue

BURRY PORT RNLI had a very special visit this week when two people rescued from the sea near Blue Pool paid a visit to the station.

On August 19, both boats were launched after a 10-year-old boy was washed from the rocks at the North Gower beauty spot and a woman jumped in to rescue him.

Burry Port’s B Class lifeboat picked up both casualties around 20 minutes after receiving the call from the Coastguard, and both were airlifted to hospital for treatment.

In what turned out to be an emotional occasion, both people involved and their families came from Swansea to visit the lifeboat station.

After a quick greeting in the Crew Room, both families were given a tour of the facilities, including both lifeboats, accompanied by crew members.

Official photos were taken, and the boy’s father gave a heartfelt speech with a special thank you to all the team. “I don’t think there was a dry eye in the Boathouse,” a spokesperson commented.

Both volunteer helmsmen on the ‘shout’ presented each family with a set of framed photographs of the crew and lifeboats in action. Every crew member present was introduced to both families by Lifeboat Operations Manager Roger Bowen.

As a result of the visit, the families have agreed to assist the RNLI in next year’s safety campaign.

“It was a heart-warming meeting, which hopefully will help both families to move on from their experience, but also gave the Crew a sense of pride, making us all think, that what we do, is a really worthwhile service,” a spokesperson for Burry Port RNLI said.

“We are all delighted that they came to see us, it was a tough meeting on the emotions, for all concerned, but we gave them an open invitation to come back to see us in the future, especially when the New Lifeboat Station is up and running.”
