OFFICERS from Natural Resources Wales (NRW) are investigating a river pollution incident in Ceredigion.
It is thought that effluent from an Anaerobic Digestion plant was released into a stream in the Lampeter area.
This has flowed into the Afon Dulas which enters the Teifi in Lampeter.
High river levels mean that it is not possible to contain much of the pollution. But this might also help to dilute the pollution and reduce the damage it might cause.
In the meantime, NRW officers are working with the site operator to clear some of the remaining effluent from the site yard and they will continue to work to minimise any further pollution.
There is no confirmation at this point about the extent of the impact but no dead fish have been seen or reported.
Ben Wilson, Ceredigion Operations Manager for Natural Resources Wales, said: “Our efforts last night and today are focused on monitoring the rivers and streams in the area to assess any impact.
“We are also working with the site operators to keep as much of it out of local streams and rivers as we can.
“Our officers are collecting evidence on site that will be used as part of a review into what caused this incident.
“Our environment is one of Wales’ greatest assets – we need to look after it so it can continue to support our wildlife, communities and economy.”
Under current regulations, the site does not need an environmental permit to operate and therefore is not regulated by NRW. However this does not affect the way NRW responds to pollution incidents.
